NEW BUILDING FOR THE UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTURE IN VENICE (IUAV)
Venice, Italy, 1998
The building appears as a double entity, as a group of two simple objects: a volume of copper looking over the lagoon and a volume of stone attached to the urban fabric, identifying the ambivalent nature of the area. The functional distinctions led to a respective grading of public access to the building and added a small 'campo' within the succession of spaces. The proposed gesture is a minimal structure that transcends an ephemeral design manifestation. The materials used, copper and stone are reconciled with the process of ageing and corrosion, and loyal to the local construction idioms of Venice.
