HOUSING COMPLEX IN METAXOURGEIO
Athens, 2006
The complex is a 'U' shaped formation, turning its internal view towards the Acropolis. Externally it is a colorful, monolithic volume. The vertical openings on the elevations repeat the rhythm and the relationship between solids and voids of Athenian neoclassical architecture. The internal courtyard of the complex refers back to the 19th century Athenian house typology. The glazed internal elevations are 'elastic, lightweight and transparent ensuring visual contact with the Parthenon. The project suggests a contemporary interpretation of the character of the place, creating a contrapuntal relation between the enclosed, defensive, external shell and the protected internal area.
