HOUSE IN MITHYMNA, LESVOS, NORTH AEGEAN SEA
Lesvos island, Greece, 2006
Two discernible stone volumes intersecting, compose the house. A trapezoidal wedge constitutes the building's main body where the gathering spaces are, whereas private spaces are arranged within a truncated cone, which "cuts" and completes the wedge. The external purity of the volumes is experienced internally as the spaces that the volumes define, are single and inseparable.
The building's volumes re examine and re-construct pre-existing volume relations of old local industrial spaces, by increasing the complexity of their geometry thus aiming to form a contemporary architectural vocabulary, that comes into balance with the vernacular architecture.
The building is located on the highest point of the site, as a natural ending to the steep hill, a landmark evolving from the landscape, an observation tower looking over Molyvos and Petra.
